For over a decade, CFRN TV has dominated the Edmonton television news market. The latest ratings book shows the local CTV affiliate maintaining its hold on their 143,300 adult viewers, up slightly from Fall 2004's 143,100 for the supper hour newscast.
While the fan base for Daryl McIntyre and Carrie Doll has remained stable, viewership at the other stations shifted around somewhat. CITV/Global dropped 5,000 viewers to 106,800 (down 17,000 in the last two years) while CKEM/Citytv/CHUM added 300 viewers, bringing its total up to 9,400. The CBC added 1,200 viewers to bring its total to 9,100.
At the noon hour, CFRN experienced a growth of 10,000 viewers for a total of 42,200. Global lost 2000 to settle at 14,700 while CKEM/Citytv and the CBC held onto between 1,600 to 2,000 combined.
CFRN's late news at 11:30 showed a slight growth from Fall 2004, adding 1,600 viewers for a total of 32,100. Both CITV/Global and CKEM/Citytv offer their late newscasts at 11 o'clock, with Global's numbers unchanged at 28,400 and Citytv's audience up 2,200 for a total of 7,100.
What remains to be seen is the impact of CBC's recent re-scheduling of its early evening news that took place January 9th, 2006. Results of the next ratings book will come in late Spring 2006 and will reflect a snapshot of the Edmonton 6 o'clock news scene with all local stations competing head-to-head for the first time in over a decade.
