Walter Elias "Walt" Disney
1901 - 1966

  Walt and Mickey

Disney's father, Elias, was Canadian -- born in Huron County, Ontario. Walt was born in Chicago, served in the first world war after altering his documents, and later returned to Kansas City. There with Ub Iwerks (who later almost single-handedly created Mickey Mouse), Disney set up Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists. The company made crude animated films that were shown in local theatres.

When Iwerks-Disney went broke, Walt moved to Hollywood with his brother Roy. Their Disney Brothers Studio operation caught on by creating one of the first cartoons with sound, Steamboat Willie, in 1928. Four years later, Disney created the first colour cartoon, a Silly Symphony called Flowers and Trees. In 1938, Disney released Snow White, the first feature-length animated film. Soon came Fantasia, live action features, a weekly television show and Disneyland. Disney died before seeing two of his other grand visions come true, EPCOT and Disneyworld.

Much has been said both for and against Disney as an animator. Perhaps he was a better showman, hiring the right people to work behind him and acting instead as the friendly corporate spokesman. The sites on this page explore all sides of the Disney empire but they all agree that he was one of the most pivotal forces in mass entertainment of the twentieth century.
