In an unusual case of making news instead of reporting it, the Toronto Star* newspaper began publishing a list of missing and dead Canadians beginning with their January 5, 2005 edition. The Star has reported that as a result of publishing the list, numerous Canadians have been confirmed as safe, dead or still missing.
The Star has updated the list several times since it was first published. The latest edition (posted at the Toronto Star site 17:28 EST January 26, 2005) is reprinted here as a convenience to Last Link on the Left site visitors.

MISSING
This is an updated version of the list of Canadians missing in Thailand following the tsunami. Compiled by federal agencies, the list was published in the Toronto Star on January 5, 2005 and is updated regularly. It may include names of those who have already been found, but whose family and friends have yet to inform Ottawa. Readers with new information on the whereabouts of the missing can call the Star at 416-869-4301 or email city@thestar.com.
Names in bold are confirmed as missing by family or friends with close regular contact.
ALSO MISSING
Canadians confirmed by the Star as missing in the tsunami zone, but not included on lists compiled from federal government sources.
REPORTED DEAD
At least six Canadians died in the tsunami zone, according to the Foreign Affairs Department. The department won't release names, citing privacy concerns. Identities of the following four are based on published reports or information from families:
