Officers were called to the Frat Niteclub and Grill, 10220 103 Street, at about 3:00 a.m. December 29th, 2007 after reports of gunfire came in.

... as police forensics members combed the scene and cordoned off a short stretch of 103rd Street north of 102nd Avenue, across from the Bay department store.

A police spokesman said the victim had left the bar and was shot several minutes later.

“Early indications are that the 27-year-old had been inside the nightclub earlier that night. The shots were fired while the victim was outside the club at the end of the evening."

“Any gang or drug connection is not known at this time,” the spokesman added. “But it is believed that the victim and suspects are known to each other.”

Police believe it was a targetted attack. They also received an earlier tip that someone was seen inside the bar displaying a handgun but it wasn't known if that person was connected to the shooting.

"At this point, it appears the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle." A small red car, described by some as a 2008 Dodge Calibre, was believed to be connected to the shooting.

"Our officers do have some information on the vehicle and the investigation is ongoing," the spokesman said.

The night manager of the nearby Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant told Global Edmonton the Frat nightclub attracts a young and varied crowd.

"A lot of times I'm here on Friday nights about one o'clock. They start picking up at twelve-thirty – one o'clock time-frame. A lot of people park in the parking lot beside us, a lot of younger people, a lot of different races going in there," Curtis Liddicoat told Global.

"It's not a very reputable place in my opinion," the manager told the Edmonton Sun.

"When I let staff out, I usually take a look around to see what's going on," he said. "I'm nervous for my staff and I walk them out. I ask if they're going to be OK, (and) if they're waiting for someone, I'll wait with them."

Liddicoat said that at around 1:00 a.m. people are often lined up to get into the Frat club, smoking on the sidewalk or parked nearby.

According to a Frat club employee, identifying himself only as Shawn, the 300-capacity club caters to a variety of customers in the 20-to-35 age bracket, offering hip-hop, Latin and Top 40 music.

Shawn pointed out the shooting took place not inside the downstairs bar but on the sidewalk and down the street from the club.

"We've been open for a year and a half and haven't had any problems," he said. "The club's been very safe."

The Frat uses the Barlink identification-tracking system. "Everyone's scanned, ID'd and we also do pat-downs, just to make sure no one's bringing in alcohol or knives or anything like that," Shawn said.

Police indicated to the Sun the Barlink tool may be part of their investigation of the shooting.

Investigators also inspected what appeared to be bullet strikes in the walls and doors of neighbouring businesses.

Police were hoping the injured man would be able to shed light on the identity of his attackers once he recovered.
