Older Dark Blue Volkswagen Jetta

At approximately 3:55 p.m. on September 3rd, 2006 a dark blue Volkswagen Jetta was westbound on Wye Road near Range Road 210, east of Edmonton and close to Sherwood Park.

The driver of the Jetta swerved to miss a porcupine on the road and in doing so struck 24-year-old Danielle Husak who was riding her bicycle on the shoulder.

After the collision, the Jetta entered the north ditch, drove along it for approximately 200 metres, drove back up onto the road and then left the scene. An area resident who heard the crash found Hysak lying in the ditch.

Husak was transported to the University of Alberta Hospital via STARS air ambulance. She suffered cracked ribs and an injured pelvis, and has to wear a temporary brace while she recovers and re-learns how to walk.

The Jetta was described by Strathcona RCMP as a dark blue, four-door older model similar to the one pictured. There may be damage on the passenger side. The driver was described as a younger, white male with short, dark blonde hair.

Husak is a Special Olympic athelete and was cleared to resume training two days before the hit and run after recovering from a previous injury. An autistic, Husak was working towards coming off of Alberta's Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program and was planning to attend college.

If you have seen this vehicle, contact Strathcona RCMP at 780-467-7741 or any of the numbers listed above.

Occupant-free Truck >permalink<

Occupant-free Truck

Between 12:30 and 5:30 a.m. on June 15th, 2006 a 2004 Ford Super Duty truck was stolen from a hotel parking lot on 72nd Street and Argyll Road.

The vehicle was then driven to Edmonton's downtown area and a snowbrush was wedged between the gas pedal and the seat. The occupant-free truck was then sent northbound on 90th Street starting at 105th Avenue.

The truck hit a fire hydrant, a telephone pole and a car parked on 106th Avenue. It then traveled up an embankment into a parking lot where it hit another vehicle and then ran into the front of the Cobblestone Place condominiums where it finally came to a stop.

The car that was parked on the street was considered to be a write off. The second car received significant damage to the driver’s side and damages to the wall of the condo’s lobby were visible from both inside and outside of the building.

No one was injured in the series of collisions and police are asking for information regarding the prank.

If you know anything about this occupant-free truck, contact any of the numbers listed above.

Whyte Avenue vandals

On May 31st, 2006 Edmonton police released 10 photographs of people they are seeking in connection with activities on Whyte Avenue on Saturday evening, May 27th.

Up to 30,000 people gathered on the avenue after the Edmonton Oilers won game 5 of the Stanley Cup western semi-final. The win placed the hockey team in the Cup finals while the behaviour of the crowd tarnished Edmonton's image in the national media.

Police released the images taken from video surveillance in an attempt to identify and charge those responsible for some of the worst incidents of hooliganism and vandalism that occured that night.

On June 15th, 2006 police announced they have laid charges in connection with the May 27th disturbance. Details at the be on the lookout for - whyte avenue vandals page.
